Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person's brain and behaviour and leads to an inability to control the use of legal or illegal drug or medicine use. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana (cannabis) and nicotine are considered drugs.

WHAT IS THE LAW IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA AROUND E-CIGARETTE USE?

In WA, it is illegal for anyone other than a participating pharmacy to sell any vaping products, whether they contain nicotine or not. Vapes sold in pharmacies must be for smoking cessation or nicotine dependance management, have pharmaceutical-like packaging, and be limited to mint, menthol, or tobacco flavours.

WHAT ARE SOME RELEVANT STATISTICS ON CANNABIS, SYNTHETIC CANNABIS AND E-CIGARETTES?

Statistics show that about 15%, or roughly 1 in 7 teens, report using cannabis, synthetic cannabis and e-cigarettes in the past month. Still, this rate is up from a few years ago, perhaps because fewer teens consider marijuana to be a harmful drug.
