“These days, loneliness is the new cancer – a shameful, embarrassing thing, brought upon yourself in some obscure way. A fearful, incurable thing, so horrifying that you dare not mention it; other people don’t want to hear the word spoken aloud for fear that they might too be afflicted, or that it might tempt fate into visiting a similar horror upon them.”

I love, love this book. And a big part of that is because Eleanor is such a unique protagonist. So much of the story is framed on Eleanor retreating from the reality of the world into her head. She kinda embodies the 5 mode of constructing a concept of the world and collecting information as a means to shield oneself from the anxiety inherent to navigating it. She is overwhelmed by isolation and loneliness -- but her means of combating these things is self-defeating; she retreats further, gathering and refining skills and experiences removed from their tangible context to give herself a sense of false confidence and preparedness. She desires romance and closeness, but is too afraid to step outside of herself to confront these desires head on.
